M.Sc. Environmental Science & Management,
The history of man is marked by continuous efforts to make good use of biosphere. The efficiency and success of his endeavors have increased as his knowledge and Understanding of the living world has grown. The environmental damage already inflicted due to alarming on-going population explosion, rapid movement towards urbanisation and industrialisation, increasing needs of energy and fast scientific and technological advancement cannot bereversed unless there is collective thinking, will and effort.
There was a time when people thought of the environment, they thought of its beauty; but now as the natural beauty of the earth that disappears, many people around the world have awoken to the realities of just how fragile our earth actually is. Central to this issue is pollution, which invokes the introduction of harmful substances into the air, land and water. Although pollution has been occurring throughout the earth's history, the rate by which the human species have contributed to the amount of pollution that has entered our environment over the past several hundred years far exceeds the earth's inherent ability to heal itself.
These call for public awareness and participation for bringing about an attitudinal change and finally restricting further damage to the environment. A need for imparting education regarding various environmental issues was fen.
Environmental science came alive as a substantive, active field of scientific investigation in the 1960s and 1970s driven by (a) the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to analyze complex environmental problems, (b) the arrival of substantive environmental laws requiring specific environmental protocols of investigation and (c) the growing public awareness of a need for action in addressing environmental problems.
In fact Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical and biological sciences, (including physics, chemistry, biology, soil science, geology, and geography, biotechnology and engineering) to the study of the environment and the solution of environmental problems. Environmental science provides an integrated, quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental systems. Whereas Environmental Management involves the management of all components of the biophysical environment, both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic). This is due to the interconnected network of relationships amongst all living species and their habitats.
Realizing the need of diversified Interest in various earth’s atmospheric and biological processes. Linkages between ecological and Social processes with a view, of an additional dimension, M.Sc. Environmental Science & Management course has been started in the Department of Zoology, Patna University, Patna (Bihar) in the year 2007.
The curriculum has components of disciplinary areas such as physical sciences, life sciences, earth and atmospheric Science, environmental biology and environmental monitoring and management.
Highly qualified faculty/resource persons / scientists drawn from various institutions/departments/ is available to impart teaching on specialized topics. In order to facilitate smooth running of the course, the Patna University has appointed a coordinator who is responsible for smooth conduct of the course. The administrative set-up of the Department is as follows:
To make spiring intelligentsia of Patna University, mentally tough, emotionally strong & intellectually sharp so that they can float quite efficiently and actively in the ever flowing and vast stream of technological advancement.
To inculcate a work culture among the student which not only enables them to peform in environmental science competitions with flying colours but also to raise themselves to enviable heights in their career?
To develop a problem solving aptitude & an analytical frame of mind.
To pursue the endeavour to nurture the young talent.
To enable the Patna University students, to settle down with a environmental science career which is intellectually challenging, professionally satisfying, socially prestigious & financially rewarding.
